 FOUNDATION LAUNCHED


As we have informed you earlier about the demise of our brother Mr Abdul Hakeem Hameed some weeks ago.

Another big step has been taken by the group known as FRIENDS OF ABDUL HAKEEM to launch a foundation in his honour to comemmorate his memory. Friends from all institutions he belonged to from the Islamic University College, Avert Youth Foundation, Jettison Youth Club and even youths who may not have met him when he was alive were all present to grace the occassion. In all, more than sixty youths were present at the ceremony.

Special guest of honour was Mr Amin Lamptey, a former assemblyman launched the foundation. The foundation was aimed at championing the course of the youth in communities within the east ayawaso constituency.

The foundation looks forward to organizing leadership programmes for the youth. You are always welcome to be a part of this leadership programmes. Hope to see you!

THE PRESIDENT’S INNAUGURAL SPEECH

We all have the responsibility of making good use of what God has given us to help our selves, our younger ones and to make a difference in our community and the nation as a whole, because our people deserve better than this and so do our communities and more importantly our younger ones deserve a better future. A future where we  will not hide our identity, a future where we will proudly proclaim that we are from Nima,Maamobi,441and Newtown .And a future where we will be the pride of our parents, our families and our community for that matter.

 

I dare every one of us this night especially the youth to be inspired, motivated and involved by the examples of our role models, by the beauty of our dreams and visions and by the missions, aims and objectives of AVERT youth foundation to fight all the pregnant of challenges that we will certainly encounter this year for us to be ready to take up the baton of leadership responsibilities in our community and the nation as a whole in the near future.

 

Indeed, we cannot all be at the fore front of the affairs but then we can help and support with our passion, love, compassion and strength.

 

Let us all put aside our differences and embrace a common goal, a common mission and a common vision and a common agenda.

 

Let us all do it for the sake of our selves, for the sake of Avert youth foundation, for t he sake of our younger ones, for the sake of our community and for the sake of our nation in a nutshell.

 

Ladies and Gentlemen: let others know exactly what we are capable of.

 

Let us not stand aside and criticize but come embrace Avert youth foundation and contribute our quota towards our success, the success of others and the success of our community and the nation as a whole.

THE AVERT AIDS CLUB CELEBRATES 26TH INTERNATINAL AIDS CANDLELIGHT MEMORIAL


 

 

About Candlelight

 

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, a program of the Global Health Council, is one of the oldest and largest grassroots mobilization campaigns for HIV/AIDS awareness in the world. Started in 1983, the Candlelight Memorial takes place every third Sunday in May and is led by a coalition of some 1,200 community organizations in 115 countries hosting local memorials that honor the lost and raise social consciousness about the disease. The Candlelight is also much more than just a memorial. It provides opportunities for leadership development, policy advocacy, partnerships, and improvement of community mobilization skills. With 33 million people living with HIV today, the Candlelight continues to serve as an important intervention for global solidarity, breaking down barriers, and giving hope to new generations

 

AVERT marked The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial service  by a community forum In front of the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) on the theme:"Together, we are the solution". The forum took place on Sunday May 17, 2009. The chairperson of the occasion was Sheikh Uthman Barry, An Opinion leader within the community and a former AU diplomat and the guest speaker was Mr. James Aryeetey of the Ghana AIDS Commission. Other distinguished guests include Fifii and Madam Lucy Oparesea,all from the West African AIDS Foundation.

 

The occasion was characterised by a door-to-door HIV/AIDS campaign,a forum, a drama by the GMSA Drama Troupe and a sensitization and voluntary counselling and testing.

 

In his speech,Mr. James Aryeetey noted that since 1986 when the incidence was first announced in Ghana, the number of people living with the disease has shot up from 42 to about 200,000 i.e. for people who have tested, which represent about 30%. According to him, AIDS is about your personal behaviour and therefore it is difficult for institutions to conquer the disease. He then advised individuals to take it upon themselves to fight the disease.

 

In his final submissions, he said although there had been Anti-retroviral drugs, there is still no cure for the disease. He said in his opinion, looking at the nature and operations of the virus, he does not think that there would ever be a cure for the disease. He advised everyone to be vigilant by abstaining. He then introduced to the participant, an AIDS patient by name Mr. Evans opata .

 

Mr. Evans informed the house that he never new how he contracted that disease since the girl friend he is living with is still HIV/AIDS Negative when tested. He said he only got to know that he is positive only last year and that he is currently receiving treatment to help him livelonger.
